Three Bridges

Lesson & Learning Study

LS involves groups of teachers collaboratively planning, teaching, observing and analysing learning and teaching in ‘research lessons’. They record their findings. Over a cycle of research lessons they may innovate or refine a pedagogical approach that will improve pupil’s learning and which will be shared with others both through public research lessons, and through the publication of a paper outlining their work.

SPRING 2018

We conducted a study in to reading comprehension & reading for meaning across the school, continuing our deep focus on Challenge for All.  Staff were put in to cross-phase teams and generated their own 'knowledgeable other' through the use of academic journals and/or published work about reading.

Group  1                                                        Group  2                                                     Group  3

Group  4                                                       Group 5

AUTUMN 2017

We had a visit from the incredible Dr Yeap Ban Har from Singapore, author of our mathematics series, Maths No Problem!  In this study, we were investigating the domains of 'challenge for all', concluding with a framework for the domains and study of what catalyses learning in mathematics.

SPRING 2017

During this round of Lesson Study, we were exploring a variety of approaches and strategies that we read about in Reading Reconsidered.  Each year group was exploring different aspects of the approach.

SUMMER 2016

In our second wave of Lesson Study, we were interrogating strategies to support advanced and struggling learners during independent working times in mathematics (journalling and Independent Practice).  As we are a model school for the Singaporean approach to mathematics, we are continually trying to refine and enhance our practice through collaborative enquiry.  A summary of the strategies and conclusions are found in the research posters.

SPRING 2016

In our first wave of Lesson Study, we were looking at strategies to support advanced and struggling learners in mathematics.  As we have started to phase out 'setting' across the school, we wanted to have the most up to date information on the breadth of learners in the classroom.  Therefore, teacher teams were asked to identify a pupil that was reflective of a group of struggling learners and a pupil that was reflective of a group of advanced learners.  This was done in order to provide the greatest opportunity for transfer of knowledge.  A summary of the strategies and conclusions are found in the research posters.
